Yes, if you require a Single User license then you must purchase the software license prior to installing the software on a computer. If you require Concurrent user licenses you must purchase Concurrent licenses equal to the number of simultaneous users accessing the software at a given time.

A Concurrent user license allows you to install IBM SPSS Statistics on any number of computers. However, only the number of users for which you purchased the license can run the application concurrently. A concurrent license manager controls your concurrent user license and allows end users to run IBM SPSS Statistics.

Features include:

  • Ghosting: You can ghost the software by installing the license manager and then installing the product on a local desktop that will be used for creating the ghosting image. Ghost the additional computers as needed.
  • Citrix and Terminal Services: You can install and publish the IBM SPSS Statistics application on your Citrix or Terminal Services Server the same way that you install and publish other Windows applications.
  • Mixed licensing: IBM SPSS Statistics has limited support for a mixed licensing environment (a combination of local authorized user licenses and concurrent licenses). In a typical environment, all licenses are handled locally or through the concurrent license manager.
  • Multiple operating systems: The platform on which the concurrent license manager is running does not have to match the platform on which the client is running. For example, a Windows license manager can serve up licenses for Mac and Windows clients.
  • Commuter licenses: Commuter licenses allow your end users to check out licenses from the license manager, so that they can use the license when not connected to the network. On Windows, commuter licenses are not enabled by default. They are enabled by default on other operating systems. Instructions for actually checking out the commuter license appear in the end user installation instructions. You can restrict the percentage of licenses that are enabled for commuting on the license manager server. It's a good idea to restrict commuter licenses to prevent all the licenses (tokens) from being used up by commuters. After the specified percentage of licenses have been used by commuters, no more will be available until the commuter licenses expire or are checked back in. You can also configure the maximum duration for which an end user can check out a license. The default maximum duration is seven days.
  • Reserve licenses: You can create a reservation file, which specifies how many licenses are reserved for specific users or groups of users. Users are identified by network IDs or computer names (not IP addresses). For example, you can set up a reservation file that reserves the license for a group of power users. Licenses will always be available for these users. You can also use the reservations to prevent certain users from accessing the license.

Additional information is available in the documentation included with the download files on the Software Catalog (Concurrent License Administrator’s Guide.pdf and Concurrent License User Installation Instructions.pdf).

For each Single User license you purchase, you are allowed to activate the software on a maximum of 4 university owned or leased computers provided you are the sole user of all computers that you install the software on. You are allowed to use your university owned or leased computers to use the software for work at home purposes. You are allowed to have all 4 computers operating simultaneously

Problem

Launching Statistics on a Apple MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, or Mac mini using Thunderbolt Technology may present the following error message on startup:

Error # 2072

There was an unanticipated problem with the license for this product.

Execution of this command stops. >Specific symptom number: 4

Cause

Booting the Mac OS X ThunderBolt Monitor versus the Laptop Monitor uses a different lock code of 10-, therefore the device used to activate the license is the one that the license is tethered to.

Environment

Mac OS X with Thunderbolt Monitor

Resolution

To correct the error (2072/4) you will need to change the Statistics applications tethering locking code from using a NIC Card tether (10) to using a Hard Drive tether (4), which is less likely to change.

You will need to know the path of where IBM SPSS Statistics is installed.
Depending of the version of Statistics you have installed the paths will vary.
NOTE: Steps one through six below may vary if you did not use the software's default path, so modify accordingly.

Here are some of versions of Statistics and their default paths.

  • Statistics 20.0: /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/20/SPSSStatistics.app/Contents/bin
  • Statistics 21.0: /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/21/SPSSStatistics.app/Contents/bin
  • Statistics 22.0: /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/22/SPSSStatistics.app/Contents/bin
  • Statistics 23.0: /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/23/SPSSStatistics.app/Contents/bin

Steps to Resolve Error

  1. Open up FINDER
  2. Open up the APPLICATIONS folder
  3. Open up the IBM folder
  4. Open up the SPSS folder
  5. Open up the Statistics folder
  6. Open up the version of Statistics xx.x (20, 21, 22, 23, xx, depending on the installed version of Statistics)
  7. Locate the "SPSSStatistics.app" (application bundle) right click and choose "Show Package Contents".
  8. Open up the "Contents" folder
  9. Open up the "bin" folder
  10. Locate and Control Click echoid.dat and choose Open With, and then choose
    TextEdit.app
  11. Change the 0x010 to 0x004
  12. Save the echoid.dat file
  13. Delete the current lservrc file in this directory (if one exists, if not continue)
  14. Run the License Authorization Wizard
  15. Re-launch Statistics. The software should now launch without error.

Problem

Upon starting SPSS Statistics you receive the following message:

There is no license for IBM SPSS Statistics.
This could be due to a missing license file or no more network licenses available.

Cause

This error is related to the authorization code for a concurrent user license and occurs under the following situations:

  • You are attempting to activate a single user license using a concurrent authorization code.
  • You are using a concurrent license and no licenses are available.

Environment

  • Mac OS X
  • Windows

Resolution

Please send a message to software@utah.edu and include a screenshot of the error(s), your order number, product name, product version.

If you purchased a concurrent license instead of a single user, then you need to purchase a single user license and we need to cancel the order and request a refund.

If you are using a concurrent license and no licenses are available, please request additional licenses from your IT manager or the purchaser of the license.

Problem

When starting SPSS you receive one of the following messages:

Problem

IBM SPSS Statistics on a Windows operating system may presents at least one of the following error messages on startup:

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect.
Please see the application event log for more detail.
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0150004).
The SPSS Statistics software will not start.

Cause

The behaviors are the result of a incorrect and/or missing the C++ Runtime component for your type of system. (x86 or x64). SPSS Statistics ships with the required version of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable libraries needed, but they were unable to be installed. The most likely cause is not having the correct write file permissions, the installation did not complete, or the installation was terminated early.

Environment

Windows Operating Systems: Windows Vista or later.

Resolution

The following procedure requires administrator privileges/credentials to complete.

  1. Open Windows Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the directory corresponding to your software products version <vernum>.
Replace <vernum> with the version number of your product (i.e. 20, 21, 22, 23, etc). The default directory for version 24 is:
    C:\Program Files\IBM\SPSS\Statistics\24
  3. Open the 'VC9' folder.
  4. In the folder will be an executable file (ending in .exe) called either vcredist_x86.exe or vcredist_x64.exe, depending on the version of SPSS Statistics installed.
    • 32-bit version of Statistics installed on 64-bit Windows operating system
      C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\SPSS\Statistics\<vernum>\VC9\vcredist_x86.exe
    • 32-bit version of Statistics is installed on a 32-bit Windows operating system
      C:\Program Files\IBM\SPSS\Statistics\<vernum>\VC9\vcredist_x86.exe
    • 64-bit version of Statistics is installed on a 64-bit Windows operating system
      C:\Program Files\IBM\SPSS\Statistics\<vernum>\VC9\vcredist_x64.exe

Run this file as Administrator by right-clicking on the file and selecting 'Run as administrator'. If 'Run as administrator' is grayed out or you do not have the administrator password when asked, please have local IT department complete the installation or have them grant you the correct administrator privileges.
  5. The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable libraries will now begin to install. Installation may take a few minutes. .
  6. Once the installation is complete, close all open windows and launch the Statistics software. The Statistics software should now start normally without the 'side-by-side' error message.

Please email all questions to software@utah.edu and a member of the Office of Software Licensing will reply to you.
