Microsoft Campus Agreement FAQ

Office for Windows, Office for Mac and Windows Upgrades.

Students are eligible if they are currently enrolled in a degree-granting program at the University of Utah. You must be currently enrolled in at least one class which, when completed, will result in the awarding of credit hours verifiable through the Office of the Registrar. You must be enrolled at the time you purchase the software.

Continuing education students or students taking only non-credit classes are not eligible to participate in this program.

No, you are limited to 1 license per product. When new versions are released, you are eligible to purchase the new software (limits still apply). For example, you can purchase Windows 7 upgrade but when you decide to upgrade to Windows 8, you can purchase Windows 8 and your Windows 7 license will be automatically terminated.

The software allows you to install the software twice. This includes the following scenarios:

  • Install on 2 separate computers; or
  • Install on 1 computer and reinstall the software again on the same computer if you need to reinstall the operating system at a future date.

The product key is limited to 2 activations. If you have already installed the software on 2 computers and need to reinstall the software, you will need to contact the Microsoft Product Activation Center for assistance with obtaining a new product key.

There are multiple Product Activation Centers worldwide. The correct phone number is based on product and location. To find the appropriate Product Activation Center telephone number for your location, run the Product Activation Wizard and select the option to activate by telephone.

This program is administered by a company called Kivuto. Here is Kivuto’s support information:

The Product Key will be provided on your receipt or email confirmation. If you cannot find your product key, contact Kivuto (see previous question).

The software itself is doesn’t expire provided you enter in your Product Key when prompted. You have 31 days from the day you purchase the software to download the install files. If you don’t complete the process within the 31 day window, you will need to pay an additional fee. We recommend you save the file(s) to a DVD or other storage media.

An upgrade installation replaces your current version of Windows with the new version of Windows. Your files, settings, and programs are kept in place on your PC. You can perform an upgrade installation using either the upgrade or full version of Windows. This installation does not require a boot DVD and you can install it from your hard drive or a USB device.

A custom installation replaces your current version of Windows with the new version of Windows but doesn't preserve your files, settings, and programs (it's often referred to as a clean installation for this reason). For installation instructions, see the ‘SUPPORT’ section of Microsoft’s web site at: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows

If you have a previous version of Windows on your computer but want to do a custom installation, you should install the software without using a product key. This will give you a limited trial version. Then install Windows again on the same system using the product key. This will upgrade your trial installation to an activated system. If you have questions, please contact the Kivuto support (see question 5.)

The University authentication system does not recognize new students as eligible until 7-14 days before classes begin. You can calculate eligibility dates by using these Academic Calendars.

Yes, if you are eligible to purchase as a student and faculty/staff, you will see two tabs on your purchase page. The student option is free and the faculty/staff work at home option is ~$10. You also have the option to purchase the faculty and staff personal license from the Home Use Program if you have an email address with ‘utah.edu’ in the domain.
