Apple School Manager

What is Apple School Manager?

Apple School Manager (ASM) is Apple's web-based portal for managing institution-owned Apple devices and apps. At the University of Utah, ASM is used primarily for:

  • Device Management: Assigning institution-owned iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple TVs to the university's mobile device management (MDM) system for automated enrollment and configuration.
  • Content Management: Acquiring and assigning App Store apps and digital content to university-owned devices through the Apps and Books program.

ASM helps departments streamline device deployment, manage app licenses, and maintain control of university-owned Apple devices.

What Apple School Manager Is Not Used For

The University of Utah currently uses Apple School Manager only for device and content management. We do not use ASM for:

  • Student information system integration
  • Automated account creation for students or faculty
  • Apple federated authentication (Single Sign-On)
  • Managed Apple IDs for general users
  • Classroom or education workflow features
