7. Where can I find information about the individual MathWorks products?

At this MathWorks Products and Services web page http://www.mathworks.com/products/?s_tid=gn_ps.

8. What are the specific usage restrictions for the software under the TAH license agreement?

The software may ONLY be used for teaching, learning and non-commercial research Academic Use purposes. For Non-Academic or Commercial Use purposes, please contact MathWorks to obtain a different license.

9. Can the software be used for administrative or operational purposes?

No. All software obtained and covered under the TAH agreement may NOT be used for University or Hospital administrative or operational purposes.

10. Who is eligible to use the software provided by the MathWorks TAH license agreement?

All University of Utah students, staff and faculty are eligible to purchase, install and use the software provided they use the software only for Academic Use purposes.

Asia campus students, staff and faculty are NOT eligible to purchase, install or use this software under this license agreement.

11. Why should I purchase the MATLAB TAH license through the OSL webstore?

 There are multiple benefits:
  • access to Concurrent Use licenses with unlimited seats. No more users being denied access because the department ran out of seats on the license. NOTE: Concurrent Use licenses come with unlimited seats. Each university department will be responsible for monitoring their maximum simultaneous usage and then purchase the required amount of Concurrent Use licenses accordingly.
  • besides getting MATLAB, you also can have Simulink and up to 49 products at no additional cost.
  • access to the most recent versions of all software and access to old versions of the software, if needed.
  • easy one product purchase through the OSL webstore at one set price regardless of purchase quantity. No individual product purchases and no tiered pricing.
  • ability to purchase a Classroom license at any quantity. MathWorks has a minimum order quantity requirement of 10 or more, per product.
  • students will have access to the same software as classrooms and labs across campus at a significantly reduced price.

12. What are the System Requirements for running this software?

Please go to the vendor website to review the System Requirements prior to purchasing this product:

13. How do I obtain and activate the software that is provided under the MATLAB TAH site license?

Please Note: OSL doesn’t provide downloads for the MATLAB products. The software is provided by MathWorks during activation/installation process.

To obtain and activate the software, follow these instructions:

14. How do I install additional toolboxes into an existing installation of MATLAB?

First, please read the important process information found here.

Then proceed to the detailed instructions found here

Specifically, you must open the MATLAB installer and on Step 7: Specify Products to Install, where you will see the additional product(s) that are available to install. You must then select the additional product(s) that you want to install and then complete the installation process.

15. Can I transition a MATLAB non-Academic or Commercial use license over to the MATLAB TAH license?

No. Non-Academic and Commercial use of MathWorks products is not covered by our TAH license, so if you are using a non-Academic or Commercial use license, please continue to do so and maintain these licenses separately.

16. I purchased a Single User license type. How many computers can I install the software on?

A Single User license obtained by you, or on your behalf, is assigned to the person and entitles that person to use MATLAB on any university owned or leased computers and any personally owned or leased computers.

17. I purchased a Single User license type. Can I run MATLAB on multiple machines simultaneously?

Yes, but you are limited to no more than two (2) computers simultaneously.

18. I already have a perpetual standalone MATLAB license. Do I have to transition over to the new MATLAB TAH license?

No. You may continue to use and manage you license separately from this agreement. Your software should continue to operate without interruption. However, you will not have access to the upgrades, updates, products, services or Simulink and any of the 49 products that are provided under the TAH license agreement.

19. If I transition my existing MATLAB software over to the TAH license, can I revert back to the old perpetual license?

Yes, but it is not recommended by both OSL and MathWorks because the older perpetual license may no longer work if you have made any type of upgrades or updates to your computer or computer operating system since the transition to the TAH license.

20. My license was suspended, put into storage, and the license included toolboxes that are not included in the MATLAB TAH agreement. What will happen to those toolboxes?

If you agreed to suspend a license, then all toolboxes not covered by the TAH agreement will become ‘child’ licenses of the TAH. Those toolboxes will be maintained separately from the TAH license.

21. What happens, from the MATLAB user’s perspective, when their license is suspended?

The license disappears from the License Center and if validation is enabled they will get the 'Deactivation Required' message below the next time they validate, which would be sometime within 30 days.

  • If validation is turned off they will not receive a message and they will continue to use MATLAB if the original license was a perpetual license.
  • With network licenses they will not receive a message but the license will still disappear from the license center.
  • If the deactivate button is pressed MATLAB will be deactivated and they will be unable to open MATLAB until it’s reactivated. If they click cancel they will be able to continue using MATLAB.
  • Once a license is suspended, Software Maintenance Service (SMS) is no longer required while the license is in storage.

22. What is the message that a user may see when their license is suspended and what should I do when the message appears?

To continue using MATLAB until you purchase the TAH license, you MUST select the Cancel button to avoid deactivation. If you select and click on the Deactivate button, MATLAB will be deactivated and you will not able to open MATLAB until it’s reactivated.

deactivation message

23. How do I get MATLAB reactivated once I have deactivated it?

Follow the instructions in question 10 on how to obtain and activate the software.

24. How do I update my license with a new license key?

Sign in to the MathWorks portal.

On the upper right side of the window, select the arrow next to your name and select Associate License.

Input the Activation Key from Step 1 and select Associate License.

25. Who should I contact if I have problems using my software?

You have several support options:

  • Do a search on the MathWorks Support website
  • Ask a question on the MATLAB Answers website
  • Contact MathWorks Support
  • If you are still unable to find a solution, please email software@utah.edu with a description of the problem and, if possible, include a screenshot of the error. Include your order number, product name, product version and operating system.

26. Who can I contact if I have additional questions and/or concerns about the MATLAB licenses or usage purposes?

Please email all questions to software@utah.edu and a member of the Office of Software Licensing will reply to you.
